Animal Allergy and Skin Treatment -Glen Oak Dog & Cat Hospital

Skin Allergy Exam

Animal skin diseases may be manifested by itching, scratching, biting, rubbing, hair loss, redness, crusts, scales, annular erosions, epidermal collarettes, and by grooming the skin.  The underlying cause(s) needs to be determined by the doctor.

There are many problems that affect the skin.  Internal problems like hypothyroidism, hyperadrenocorticism, Cushing’s Disease, autoimmune diseases such as pemphigus foliaceus, erythematosus, vulgaris, bacterial infection, allergy to mold, dust, tree, grass, and weed pollen, fleas, demodex (red mange), sarcoptic mange, sex gland abnormalities, hereditary diseases, and certain food proteins such as chicken, beef, and lamb. Additionally, contact with certain irritant and allergic compounds can cause a contact dermatitis.

It takes a skilled, experienced doctor who has seen these conditions to determine the cause of why the skin condition is the way it is. Dr. Richard Rossman has been successfully treating the North Shore’s most challenging skin cases for more than 35 years.

Dr. Rossman uses a complete history, physical examination, skin scrapings, skin biopsies, and laboratory tests, if indicated, to determine the cause of the problem.  He is able to do intradermal skin testing (the gold standard), to determine which allergens are causing the problem.

We have a wide range of modalities which we use to treat the skin and allergy diseases. Allergy testing and desensitization, steroids, antibiotics, antifungals, anti-parasite treatments and more. Having Dr. Ashley Rossman as part of the team, allows us to combine western medicine with eastern medicine. Acupuncture and herbal medicines may be used to further recovery from acute and chronic skin disease.
